Blog > Commuting to Camp Pendleton, Miramar & Coronado From Temecula Valley
Live Here, Report There
Yes, you can live in Temecula Valley and commute to Camp Pendleton, MCAS Miramar, or Naval Base Coronado. But the honest answer on drive time is that it depends on two things: when you leave and where you're going on base.
I'll be straight with you. This commute isn't for everyone. For a lot of military families, though, the bigger home, strong schools, and lower price per square foot make it worth it. Here's what the drive really looks like.
Drive Times at a Glance
Camp Pendleton, Mainside: about 35 to 40 minutes with no traffic. Plan on 45 to 75 minutes or more at rush hour.
Camp Pendleton, through the Fallbrook Gate: about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on where you work on base.
Camp Pendleton, north end: plan on 1 hour 15 minutes or more.
MCAS Miramar: about 50 minutes with no traffic. Rush hour on I-15 can push it past an hour.
Naval Base Coronado: about an hour if you're on the road before 6 a.m. Leave later and it can take 2 hours or more.
Times are from South Temecula. Murrieta and Menifee add time. These ranges come from map data plus what local military families report.
Camp Pendleton Is Huge, So Your Gate Matters
What most people don't realize is that Camp Pendleton covers more than 125,000 acres. It runs from Oceanside all the way up to San Clemente. Getting through the gate is only part of your commute. Driving from the main gate to the north end of base can take over 30 minutes by itself, even with no traffic.
So the first question isn't "how far is Pendleton?" It's "where on Pendleton will you work?" Ask your sponsor which area your unit is in and which gate people in your shop use.
The front way: Most Temecula commuters take I-15 south, then SR-76 west toward Oceanside and the San Luis Rey Gate. With no traffic, it's about 35 to 40 minutes to Mainside.
The back way: You can also drive through Fallbrook to the Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook gate on Ammunition Road, then cut through to Camp Pendleton. It skips the coastal gates and I-5 traffic. Plan on about 30 to 45 minutes total, depending on where you're headed. You'll need your DoD ID, since the route runs through a Navy installation. The weapons station runs this gate, and it's closed before for wildfires, so check it before you count on it.
What Rush Hour Really Looks Like
Here's the part map apps don't show you. Military families in Temecula say the drive to Pendleton takes at least an hour on a normal weekday. Heading to the north end of base, it's often 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. One spouse shared that her husband's drive to the Del Mar area of base grew from about an hour in 2016 to about 2 hours by 2023.
The afternoon drive home is usually the hardest. I-15 northbound starts backing up as early as 2 p.m. and stays heavy through about 6 p.m.
For Coronado, timing is everything. Families report about an hour if you're on the road before 6 a.m. Leave later and it can run 2 hours or more. Some days, the afternoon drive home can take close to 3 hours.
Before you buy, do a test run at your real report time and again at your real drive home. A route that takes 40 minutes on a Saturday can look very different at 6 a.m. on a Tuesday.
MCAS Miramar: A Straight Shot Down I-15
Miramar is the simplest commute to explain. You get on I-15 south and stay on it. It's about 47 miles, or around 50 minutes with no traffic. The main gate sits right off I-15 at Miramar Way.
The I-15 Express Lanes help a lot. They run down the middle of the freeway from SR-78 in Escondido to SR-56, so carpools and FasTrak drivers can skip a big chunk of the slowdown.
Where to Live in Temecula Valley for Each Base
In Temecula Valley specifically, South Temecula is the sweet spot for San Diego County commutes. Neighborhoods off Temecula Parkway, like Wolf Creek, Paseo del Sol, and Vail Ranch, put you close to I-15 heading south. You can browse that area on my South Temecula page.
Camp Pendleton: South Temecula works well. If the commute is your top priority, look at Fallbrook. You'll skip I-15 completely and be minutes from the back gate.
Miramar or Coronado: Stay as close to I-15 as you can. South Temecula gives you the biggest head start.
Murrieta: Great schools and a lot of newer homes. You're starting a little farther north than South Temecula, and the I-15 and I-215 split can add time at rush hour.
Wildomar: More room and often a lower price point, right on I-15. You're starting farther north, so plan for a longer drive to any base.
Menifee: You'll get more house for the money, but you're starting farther north on I-215. Plan for the longest drive of the group.
Your BAH, Your VA Loan, and Your Payment
Here's what that actually means for you. Your BAH is set by your duty station, not your home address. So if you're stationed at Camp Pendleton and buy in Temecula, you still get Pendleton BAH. In 2026, an E-6 with dependents there gets $4,398 a month. Miramar and Coronado fall under the San Diego housing area, which has its own rates.
Because homes here cost less than on the coast, that same BAH can cover more of your mortgage payment. That's the trade a lot of families make: more drive time for more home.
That's where having both sides handled matters. When I'm helping you pick a house, I'm also running the loan numbers. I can show you how your BAH lines up with your payment before you ever write an offer. VA loans let eligible buyers purchase with zero down, and BAH can count as income when you qualify. If you have a service-connected disability rating, you're usually exempt from the VA funding fee too.
Military life means orders, so plan your exit, too. Many of my clients keep their Temecula home as a rental when they PCS. I break down that choice in Sell Your Temecula Home or Turn It Into a Rental.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the commute from Temecula to Camp Pendleton?
About 35 to 40 minutes to Mainside with no traffic. On a normal weekday, plan on about an hour, and longer if you work on the north end of base. Pendleton is huge, so where you work on base matters as much as where you live.
Can I use the Fallbrook gate to get onto Camp Pendleton?
Yes, if you have base access. The gate on Ammunition Road leads through Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook into Camp Pendleton. It skips I-5 traffic, but it's closed before for wildfires, so check before you rely on it.
How long is the drive from Temecula to Miramar and Coronado?
Miramar is about 50 minutes with no traffic and can run past an hour at rush hour. Coronado is about an hour if you leave before 6 a.m., and 2 hours or more if you leave later.
Does my BAH change if I live in Temecula instead of near base?
No. BAH is based on your duty station, not where you live. Living inland, where homes cost less, can mean your BAH covers more of your payment.
